Leading on Gender Equality
I spoke to the U.S. Conference of Mayors this week, and focused my remarks on why cities must be leaders in gender equality. L.A. has a remarkable story to tell: my administration achieved gender parity on City boards and commissions for the first time in history, we have dramatically increased girls’ participation in sports and recreation programs, and we’re doing more than ever to bring female recruits into the ranks of our first responders. I closed my remarks with a message to men: gender equity is not just important because we have wives, daughters, and mothers — it's the right thing to do. It is important to make gender equity a priority, because it is the smartest way to make our cities more safe and prosperous.
