An Elevated Tram at LAX

Today we took another big step forward in our efforts to modernize LAX -- and relieve congestion on Westside roads!
 
This morning, I joined Mayor Eric Garcetti and officials from Los Angeles World Airports to break ground on the new Automated People Mover at LAX - a 2.25-mile elevated tram that will connect travelers to trains, to a new rental car center, to a transit hub, and to airport terminals.
 
Once it is open in 2023, the free elevated tram service will allow passengers to avoid the notorious congestion in the central terminal area. The tram will provide users of mass transit - including Metro rail - a convenient way to avoid a car trip to and from the airport altogether. That means fewer cars on Westside roads.
 
Car trips to and from the airport are one of the biggest contributors to north-south traffic on the Westside, and reducing airport traffic helps all of us. That’s why I am so proud that we are finally connecting rail to LAX. The Crenshaw-LAX Line will open in early 2020, and will include a new Aviation/Century station with frequent bus shuttle service to a from the terminals. An additional Metro station dedicated to airport transit with a seamless rail connection to the tram will open in 2023.
 
And I am pushing Metro to fast forward efforts to build a new north-south transit line from the San Fernando Valley to LAX. That project will be a game-changer for Westside traffic, with several stops in Westside neighborhoods.
 
The elevated tram and Metro rail connection are part of a broader effort to modernize LAX and make it more convenient and attractive to all of us who use it. In the past few years, LAX has modernized several terminals, and has more terminal improvements on the way. And since it is funded by the airlines themselves, LA taxpayers don’t have to pay a penny for it.
 
This is all great stuff, and it has required a tremendous partnership with neighbors and community leaders. I am eager to do more with you, and am looking forward to working together to move Los Angeles forward, do good, and get things done for our neighborhoods.
